Dr. Katz has been practicing general dentistry in Springfield since 1988 – although he prefers to call it "gentle dentistry." Dozens of families whose children have grown up in his care would agree with that distinction.
In 1995 he also began treating patients for sleep apnea and snoring. He is the only dentist in the Pioneer Valley who is board-certified in oral appliance therapy for these conditions, and works closely with physicians to offer this option to their patients. His is the only Western Massachusetts Diplomate of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Three Generations of Helping People Sleep Easy
Dr. Katz has a family history in the “sleep” business dating back to 1914, encompassing his grandfather’s mattress business and his father’s top-of-the-line Sleep Easy mattress. Dr. Katz took his own path but with a similar mission, tapping early into the science of oral appliances to help patients overcome snoring and sleep apnea.
He joined the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in 1996 and became a Diplomate in 2000, the first year the Academy awarded this fellowship. Dr. Katz currently serves as a dental consultant to numerous sleep practices.
He has found that his experience treating patients for sleep apnea corresponds with clinical studies that have found that a well-made, custom-fit, adjustable oral appliance effectively reduces or eliminates sleep apnea. This in turn improves the patient’s overall health and quality of life.
A graduate of Tufts University with a DMD degree from the University of Connecticut, Dr. Katz also has studied implantology at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, which signifies more than 500 hours of continuing education and successful completion of a fellowship exam.
